Die Nationale Schule für Fremdenführer in Griechenland bietet eine dreieinhalbjährige Universitätsausbildung an, die vom griechischen Ministerium für Kultur und Tourismus autorisiert und beaufsichtigt wird. Diese Ausbildung dient dazu, die zukünftigen offiziellen Touristenführer in Griechenland (die nach erfolgreichem Abschluss eine entsprechende Lizenz verliehen bekommen) zu unterrichten und auf ihren Beruf vorzubereiten, den sie einmal ausüben werden. Hierbei repräsentieren sie dann auch ihr Land weltweit.
Die angebotenen Kurse beinhalten 28 verschiedene Fächer/Unterrichte, von denen die wichtigsten Geschichte (Antike, Byzantinische und Moderne), Archäologie (Prähistorische, Klassische, Byzantinische und Post-byzantinische) sowie Kunstgeschichte sind. Die 25 anderen Fächer variieren und beinhalten verschiedene Themen wie Geschichte des antiken Theater und der Architektur, Mythologie, Geschichte der antiken Literatur Griechenlands, Geologie, Geographie und Ethnologie bis hin zu Ökonomie, Psychologie, Erste Hilfe und Orthofonie.
Die Eingangsexamina sowie die Prüfungen zum Abschluss eines Semesters und das abschließende Universitätsexamen zählen zu den schwierigsten ihrer Art in Griechenland. Des Weiteren werden auch Sprachkenntnisse abgefragt und die so ausgebildeten Touristenführer sind nach dreieinhalb Jahren Studium dazu ermächtigt, als lizenzierter Touristenführer in ganz Griechenland zu arbeiten.
Alle offiziellen und lizenzierten Touristenführer der Nationalen Schule für Touristenführer sollten ihren offiziellen Ausweis sichtbar tragen, wenn sie Touristen auf Ausflügen und Exkursionen führen.
Der offizielle Ausweis ist mit einem Foto des jeweiligen Touristenführers, dem in griechischen und lateinischen Buchstaben (bzw. auf Englisch) geschriebenen Namen des Touristenführers, den Sprachen, in denen dieser Touristenführer ermächtigt ist, Touren anzubieten und ihre/seine Code-Nummer versehen.
Außerdem muss auf dem Ausweis der Stempel des griechischen Ministeriums für Kultur und Tourismus zu sehen sein.
Jeder, der keinen solchen Ausweis besitzt, ist KEIN offizieller und lizenzierter Touristenführer und man sollte zweimal überlegen, ob man sich einer solchen Person anvertraut.
